“I really enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to using the techniques in all aspects of my life.”
“⭐️ 3.75 Okay this book was like 30% cliche and fluff, but 70% exactly what I needed to hear as a chronic “fixer” and control freak😂 What I liked: -Other people will have bad thoughts about you, let them -Imagine how much more you could accomplish if you just let people have negative thoughts about you. -Trying to control others only gives the illusion of safety -The section on navigating adult friendships because WOW it’s so hard, and there was so much helpful info in there! -the science-y talk about the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, vagus nerve, and the body’s stress response. HEEEEEECK yeah. As a yoga teacher and science lover who deals with a crap ton of anxiety, this section spoke to me. -I liked that this wasn’t just “you do you and cut ties with anyone who disagrees.” Robbins brought up valid points of self reflection and I appreciated that perspective. What I didn’t: -The whole motivational speaker mindset of “you can do anything if you want it bad enough and work hard enough.” Nope. Unfortunately not 100% true for all people. You can’t just work your way out of poverty, like the author suggested from her own story, or chronic illness, or mental health issues. Sure. That works for some people. But I don’t love invalidating other’s experiences because if they wanted to, they would. I wish the world looked like that, but unfortunately, it doesn’t. The playing field is not always level. -One thing I don’t like about a lot of self help books is there’s a lot in it that sounds great, and inspiring, and motivating, but when you go to apply it, it’s all fluff. -“This ONE thing is the key to change your life” narrative. The truth is, what works for some won’t work for others. And while I do think a lot of people could benefit from the let them theory in their lives, it’s not the answer to everything. It’s not a magic formula. Overall, I really did enjoy this book, and I would recommend it to almost anyone! I’m biased because I think most self help books just make people more obsessed with themselves, when many problems are solved from looking outside of yourself, rather than within. That being said, I don’t regret reading this one at all!”
“Overall I think this book has some good advice, especially for people who struggle with setting boundaries, worrying about what others think, and feeling like they need to be in control all the time. In the beginning I thought the book felt a little shallow, but the second half of the book was better. I actually really liked what she said about adult friendships and thought that section had really good advice. I did have some issues with parts, like her saying a parent should be able to talk to their adult child's therapist if the parent was paying for it. That was a weird example for the situation she was describing. I would recommend this book to people I know.”
