“I had such high hopes for this book, but there were so many issues. The main one is that there are so many plot holes and threads left undone, that it didn't feel like the ending of a series, just another installment. Let's start with the beginning. The first chapter was the wrong place to start. Why start Scarlett and Albert's final story with a stranger who ends up dead halfway through the book? And 2 years have passed? Why not show us that time? The trials and tribulation and what they're building... which all gets taken from them by the white hats, so what's the point?
Here are some of the questions that never get answered:
1. What are the tainted? Where did they come from? The brief moment with Monk shows a little of their similarities with Albert, but what does it mean? Are they the same? Is that what Albert will become?
2. Where are the animals coming from? The cataclysm and world ending events imply some sort of (I guess) nuclear disaster. I'm disappointed that the author would jump right to megafauna (including bugs, which is physically impossible - they would all suffocate). That kind of size change takes millions of years to happen with evolution.
3. What happened to all the pets. No cats? No dogs?
4. What actually happened with the cataclysm? Did Albert's people cause it?
5. What are the ancient weapons and glow shards? Radioactive shards? Are the ferrets all going to die in their 20s from radiation poisoning? Scarlett and Thomas have been waiting almost a decade to reunite, and they're going to get a year to reconnect before his bones start melting?
6. Why in the world would Thomas and Thea choose to stay and work for the people who abused them? It gave me no hope for their emotional recovery.
7. What happened to Mallory's missing powers? If Albert and Mallory are a mutant subspecies of humans, how would one lose those powers? That's not how genetics work.
8. What power does Ettie have? It's so muddled and random I couldn't make sense of it.
9. What does Albert become? Does he just keep growing stronger and all powerful? That's so dangerous.
10. Where are they getting coffee, fuel, cotton clothing, tires, and sugar from? These are global commodities that absolutely are not grown or manufactured in the UK. They're literally cut off from the rest of the world.
This is a list of my most frustrating questions, but is by no means exhaustive. I was deeply disappointed by this series ending. I adore Scarlett and Albert and had such high hopes for what these outlaws would do to fix the world. I suppose I'll have to imagine that ending myself. Also, prepare a class to teach authors about how global commodities would NOT be available in a post-apocalyptic world. Sigh.”

It had angst, it had more angst, it has found family, redemption, my god I love it. My friends will be sick of me talking about this series and if need physical copies on my shelf yesterday!
Im really fond of how Jonathan Stroud manages to capture found family. Like you start off with a lone wolf but during the story you learn more and more about the strengths and weaknesses of having your own little family. God I loved this
The angst also got properly upped! I like how you can see the influenced Albert and Scarlett have on each other. Scarlett got more hesitant with unnecessary killing, where as Albert is suddenly open for killing and a bit of properly timed cruelty. Its a nice balance to see and many authors can learn from Stroud in this!
I also liked how in the last bit you see how Thomas and Scarlett have to adapt to each other again. The books of Stroud always got a nice mirror of reality in it. It makes them so much more relatable, its messy but you'll find a way. Its what I needed when I was younger, and its what I appreciate and praise now that im older.”
