The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"A fairy tale in the oldest and truest sense: a haunting dream full of blood and love, vicious truths and beautiful lies. It swallowed me whole, and I went willingly." — Alix E. Harrow, New York Times bestselling author of Starling House

“Decadence laced with horror . . . A delightfully meta fairy tale . . . Magic emanates from every exquisitely crafted sentence.” — Charlie Jane Anders, Washington Post

In the tradition of sumptuous gothic novels like Starling House and The Bloody Chamber comes a dark fairy tale-infused story about a cursed friendship and a marriage steeped in secrets—the breathtaking adult debut from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi.

Once upon a time, a man who believed in fairy tales married a beautiful, mysterious woman named Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. He was a scholar of myths. She was an heiress. In exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past.

But when the couple returns to Indigo’s childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend, who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage . . . or their lives.

Through a tapestry of secrets woven around dangerous shards of truth, Chokshi crafts an atmospheric fever dream of a novel about love and lies, secrets and betrayal, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.

"Chokshi's tale is as sweet as a piece of fairy fruit, and just as wicked. Every bite is velvet, every swallow is gold, and the taste lingers like a fever dream." — V. E. Schwab, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

"Gorgeous and ornate, this sensual fairy tale illuminates the corrosive and redemptive power of both love and lies." — Holly Black, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book of Night

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This was the perfect atmospheric read that really leant into the old fairytale roots. I enjoyed the pacing and the characters were very intriguing, and I gasped at the ending.”
““You never forget the moment when beauty turns to horror.” The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is a gothic novel with beautiful imagery and an interesting friendship. We have 2 POVs in this story “The Bridegroom” and Azure. Both of which are drawn to Indigo and her charismatic and fantastical personality. This story focuses on two children from completely different worlds and the toxic friendship that occurs between them. Plus a spouse who is there in the future to put some pieces together, but is not really integral to the storyline. Though the story is beautifully written it just fell short for me. There was a lot of imagery that did not move anything forward in our plot. We have Azure’s POV and she is drawn to Indigo and the House of Dreams. The house, like most gothic novels, is supposed to be a character in itself and it has a lot of potential, but that was not explored. It mostly tripped someone when it was unhappy or other things like that. I would have liked to see more of the house. Our bride-groom, Indigo’s husband, is only ever known as the bride-groom and is in love with Indigo. Her beauty but mostly her love of fairy tales, as he is a fairy tale expert. In fact, he introduces the Tale of the Flower Bride. The bride-groom does not offer a whole lot to the story overall. He just connects the past to the present in a haunted weird game of Clue. The best voice is that of Azure, her perspective of life, her relationships with her mother, step-dad, and the world of Indigo. I had no real connection with any characters. It felt like there was a lot I could connect to, but I think we were putting too many eggs in baskets. There was a lot of potential to explore more into the toxic relationships or the obsession with the fae. Why do we have that obsession in the first place? The romance between Indigo and the Bridegroom was glossed over. Really everything with the Bridegroom was glossed over. There was potential to develop the house as a bigger and more robust character. I just feel like with the beautiful and often lyrical type of writing there could have been a bit more substance. Also, there was so much foreshadowing of the “big twist” You know pretty much from the start what is coming. I will always love multiple narrators for different POVs. Both of our narrators did a great job developing the voices of the characters and bringing the story to life.”
