“I didn’t love this as much as I had hoped and it felt like a bit of a Slog. For a large portion of the book I felt like I was waiting for something to happen, yet when we got to an action scene it was over within a paragraph or two. I also felt like characters were fairly flat. Especially with Astrophel and Leilani it felt as if they had sudden changes of personality at multiple times throughout. I would have preferred a bit more subtlety in their development. Blayze felt completely flat to me. I didn’t feel invested in the romance at all. I’m generally not a fan of love triangles but this one felt especially poorly executed with no real pull to either love interest. Her attraction to Blayze seemed slightly out of nowhere.
I also thought the world building was simultaneously over complicated and underdeveloped. The glossary at the beginning did not give me a great first impression here as I suspected the lore in the story would then not feel well explained; I have to say this turned out to be true.
Story wise, I am interested in the world and the dawn/shadow magic. I will pick up the next book to see if it engages with this in a more interesting and fluent manner”
“I went to an author event for the publication of this and was SO excited to read it. The way the author described the world building and lore, and the connection to the characters, perhaps that was my first mistake and I set my expectations too high. This almost felt like a prequel to the main story in a lot of ways, I’d be lying if I said that much actually happened in this book. There are still so many holes though in the lore for me and I really struggled to connect with the characters for the most part. Having said that, I did enjoy the connection to nature and the natural elements through the characters. There were parts of the story I found myself really intrigued by, but a lot of it just felt somewhat filler-y? I will probably read the next book at some point just to see where the story goes, but it’s definitely not one I’ll be rushing out for.”

Venetia Constantine read English at King's College, Cambridge and holds a PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute. She paused a cherished career in the art world to pursue her dreams of becoming an author, swapping galleries for an enchanted windmill, where she now writes full-time.
