“immersing and whimsical, i wanted to get a taste of Danny's creation myself”
“Summer 2019 (Hugo Award Nominee 2019 - Novelette); An invitation to a Temporal Confections dinner is equally coveted and feared, but never declined. (4.5 Stars) Dark, deep, and decadent, is how you will find this piece. There is the endless sumptuousness of the food itself, delectable enough to tease the tongue of any reading with its gorgeous descriptions, and yet it promises (and delivers on) so much more. The stage is set as the Duke's Banquet of Temporal Confections, and though we don't yet know why the title calls it the last, the story, and our narrator, the Duke's TasteTester and the Baker's Wife, draw us slowly, delicately through this intrigue of both dinner and a land under siege. The idea of the temporal confections, all of which bring up specific memories, sometimes linked and sometimes now, is wonderful. I love the idea of pastries, and breads, and sweets that would bring you back to the best and the worst of times, that would make you revisit your past to change and to bolster you with goodness, pride, and peace when you need it as well. Bravi.”
“The Duke barely flicks his eyes Saffron’s direction. She knows what to do, and smiling, she cracks the thin toast in two with her fine silver fork, and takes her bite. Our main character, Saffron, has a job tasting the pastries her husband Danny makes before the despot king tastes them himself— but the thing about Danny's pastries is that they contain a kick that draws on the tasters' own memories and emotions. Through the banquet, Saffron's story is revealed through what she sees when tasting these magical creations, and we learn just what exactly and how high the stakes are in the world and everything that has lead her to this point. This story is like that scene in Ratatouille when Ego tastes the said ratatouille and is sent back in time to when his own mother made it for him. This story was enthralling and a delight to the senses. It's a short but it manages to establish its characters so well throughout, and I'm so surprised at how much I *felt* for Saffron and her plight as the truth unravels over the course of the banquet. I wouldn't change a thing about this; it's got the makings of a dystopian but retains a strictly fairytale nature all the way up till the end— which was as satisfying as eating a perfectly sweetened chocolate.”
