The Lady from Zagreb
ByPublisher Description
In this Edgar® Award-nominated novel in Philip Kerr’s New York Times bestselling series, former detective and unwilling SS officer Bernie Gunther is on the hunt for a beautiful femme fatale...
Berlin, 1942. Three players take the stage. The first, a gorgeous actress—the rising star of a giant German film company controlled by the Propaganda Ministry. The second, the very clever, very dangerous Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels—a close confidant of Hitler, ambitious schemer, and flagrant libertine. Finally, there's Bernie Gunther—a former Berlin homicide bull now forced to run errands at the Propaganda Minister’s command.
When Goebbels tasks Bernie with finding the woman the press have dubbed “the German Garbo,” his errand takes him from Zurich to Zagreb to the killing fields of Croatia. It is there that Bernie finds himself in a world of mindless brutality where everyone has a hidden agenda—perfect territory for a true cynic whose instinct is to trust no one.

This story started off really good, but then about midway through the book...it became less focused. It didn't bother me, but it may bother others who read it.
I like being with Bernie. He's definitely not a totally good person. He's done a lot of shady things, but he's NOT a Nazi and he lives by a code (though sometimes it may not be the code that you yourself live by).
Bernie gets involved with a married woman. This is not the type of thing I would want to happen in my life...for I am married...and it'd piss me off if someone was having relations with my wife. No, that is NOT acceptable behaviour.
BUT, also...it didn't seem smart for him in an in world situation, either. For the woman, who was married...was being chased after by Chancelor Joseph Goebbels (who himself was married and had 6-7 children with his wife). For Bernie, though...chancing a fling with a married woman...and ALSO chancing that Joseph Goebbels would find out about it...that's nuts.
I really loved how it all worked out. Not good, and definitely not really, really bad.
The Epilogue was fun, too. So make sure you read it, too.”
