The Knight's Runaway Maiden Reviews

4.0
“I expected this to be tantamount to many of the other Harlequin Historicals that I’ve read before. But, it’s completely and utterly different. In such a good way. There was so much depth to this story; it surprised me. From the first page of this I was hooked and couldn’t wait to get to the end. Reading Séverine and Balthus’ love story is absolutely worth the journey to the end. Séverine is an inspiring heroine who manages to take care of herself and remain strong throughout all the hardships that she endures.”
“The Knight’s Runaway Maiden is a wonderful enemies-to-lovers historical romance that follows Severine, a woman whose main goal is to protect her sons from her brutal husband and in-laws. She flees and hides with her boys for six years before Balthus, the brother of her husband and the man she once favored, finds her. Balthus always loved Severine, but knew he could not have her. Now his brother’s widow, Severine has the key to ending his family’s control forever. But Severine doesn’t know her husband is dead, and Balthus fears she’ll leave if she finds out? Can Severine and Balthus trust each other? Will they give in to their feelings after secrets and lies are revealed? An unrequited, forbidden, enemies-to lovers romance, Severine and Balthus are at war with their feelings. They know they shouldn’t care for each other, they don’t fully trust each other, yet they can’t deny the way they feel. So many obstacles stand in their way, including lies, secrets, and fear, but at the forefront is Balthus’s evil, ruthless, and manipulative family. Severine and Balthus both have a lot to work through – Balthus deals with feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness, and Severine is haunted by abuses of the past. Both struggle with trusting others. However, they both also remember when they first met and the way they felt about each other, and as they slowly become reacquainted, their chemistry can’t be denied. Torn between feelings and logic, their budding romance is angst-filled swoon-tasticness! I also love the secondary characters, including Severine’s sons and the friends who help protect her. Severine’s boys are rambunctious, curious, and super energetic. They are a delight, and it’s clear that they are well loved. Some of the sweetest scenes are with Balthus and the boys, and I think that endears Balthus to Severine even more. Balthus’s traveling companion Henry is also fantastic, and I enjoyed the witty levity, fierce protectiveness, and impenetrable loyalty he and other characters brought to the story. There is a found family dynamic throughout the novel that unites the characters, which is lovely. Sarah and Imbert and other villagers are people who love and protect each other no matter what, and I’m curious to see how their stories progress in the future books in the series. Though this is not the first book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. However, I definitely want to go back and read the first book because I really enjoyed this one! Thanks so much to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.”
“Nicole Locke is one of the reasons I read historical fiction. The Knight’s Runaway Maiden is a dark, historical romance and the writing is beautiful. This is definitely not a light read and there is a lot going on, but Nicole Locke is an expert with crafting a well-written, intriguing novel that keeps your attention all the way through. The characters are extremely fleshed out. I am very impressed with the character growth, especially Séverine. She is a great lead character to follow. Overall, The Knight’s Runaway Maiden is an excellent novel. Dark, compelling, with excellent characters. If you enjoy historical fiction, don’t pass this one up. *I received a free copy of this book from Rachel’s Random Resources to review honestly on the blog tour. All opinions are my own and unbiased.*”
“I am a big fan of historical fiction, especially historical romance but this book really intrigued me. I’ve never read a book set in the 1200s before and there was something about the synopsis that pulled me in straight away. The main character is Séverine, who 6 years ago fled her marriage and her husband, Ian of Warstone taking her sons with her. Séverine has managed to avoid her husband and the detection of the Warstone clan until she is found by her husband’s younger brother Balthus. But what does Balthus want and what is his reason for finding her. It transpires that Balthus is trying to find her to tell her Ian is dead, deliver Ian’s last message to her but also to find out if she took a particular document with her belonging when she left because should it fall into the wrong hands could have devastating consequences. But Balthus are more that sister in law and brother in law because prior to Ian announcing that he would be marrying Séverine and not her sister, it was Balthus that was to be betrothed to Séverine. I loved the character of Séverine, her strength and everything she had gone through shone through like a beacon making her such a strong person. The decision to leave her husband and take her children was not an easy one. The dynamic between Balthus and Séverine was brilliant and it was clear that they were meant to be together even though fate had other ideas for them. It was clear from their interaction that there was definitely something between them and they were meant to be together. To a certain extent they are very similar in that that are both broken and both conflicted about how they feel for each other. Although this was a historical romance there is also another more political storyline running alongside it which added more depth to the story. I really enjoyed this book and do think there could be potential for standalone stories exploring the lives of the other Warstone brothers and Séverine’s sisters and what became of them as they are only briefly touched upon as this book centres around Séverine and Balthus. A story of secrets and unrequited love. I received a gifted copy for an honest review.”
