“DePoy is one of my favorite mystery writers so I came to this with a bit of a bias. I liked this -- not as much as DePoy's Fever Devlin series but this particular book was a really fun read. There was a nice blend of fiction and history with a bit of a redemption story thrown in for good measure.
Someone is killing the translators of original documents needed for the new King James bible so Deacon Marbury goes to some "priests" to get help and they in turn provide him with "Brother" Timon who, unbeknownst to Marbury, is really the Pope's hired gun to use when the Catholics get worried about the Protestants getting too uppity and need taking care of. Timon is hired by Marbury to find the killer but Timon is also hired by the Pope to spy on the translators and "memorize" all of the translated material. A 17th Century Double Agent.
The real historical detail at the end of the book is also interesting with the door left open for a sequel and there was enough interesting and fun in this tale to make me want to hear more from "Brother" Timon.”
