The Kindly Ones

By Jonathan Littell
The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A literary sensation when it was first published in France, Jonathan Littell's was awarded both the Gran Prix du roman de l'Academie and the Prix Goncourt. Second World War historian Antony Beevor called it "a great work of literary fiction, to which readers and scholars will turn for decades to come" Now it is available in a sparkling English language edition by the renowned translator Charlotte Mandell ( , UK) A former Nazi officer, Dr. Maximilien Aue has reinvented himself, many years after the war, as a middle-class family man and factory owner in France. An intellectual steeped in philosophy, literature, and classical music, he is also a cold-blooded assassin and the consummate bureaucrat. Through the eyes of this cultivated yet monstrous man we experience in disturbingly precise detail the horrors of the Second World War and the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Eichmann, Himmler, Göring, Speer, Heydrich, Höss—even Hitler himself—play a role in Max's story. An intense and hallucinatory historical epic, is also a morally challenging read. It holds a mirror up to humanity—and the reader cannot look away.

Anxious Face with sweat“The long dark journey is over. One of the best books I've ever read without a doubt. A lot of the events in the book are absolutely disgusting, disturbing and sound impossible even though we know many of these events as historical facts. But what's even more terrifying? The parallels to the present day. It makes you start to think about just how educated, how cultured, how hard working and intelligent so many of these officers of the Third Reich were. You could definitely argue that the average German was more knowledgeable about history, classical music, politics etc than the average person today. And if people like that allowed and or executed such horrific and terrible events, what is possible today? How dark can things get? When is it too early or even too late to starting sounding alarms? I'm glad this journey is over but it was a thought provoking and satisfying ride.”
