“This is a dark gothic urban fantasy that follows three young women whose are tied together when their paths cross on the hunt for the occult and a serial killer.
Emer, crafts magical tattoos for women in danger. Jude is billionaire's daughter whose soul is literally rotting from a botched demonic deal and Zara, a grieving girl desperate to use necromancy to find her sister's killer.
I really wanted to love this one, but unfortunately, I struggled to fully engage with the story.
I found that the horror elements were brilliant, Krystal Sutherland writes body horror and macabre imagery beautifully, it’s genuinely unsettling, and the concept of the magic system being tethered to a rotting soul or stolen skin was incredibly unique and eerie.
However, the pacing let it down for me. There were several sections that felt quite long-winded, and the plot seemed to drag in the middle, which repeatedly pulled me out of the story. Because of the sluggish pacing, I found myself disconnected from the characters and the overarching mystery at times.
Overall, it’s a solid book with an amazing, spooky atmosphere and great horror concepts, but the execution felt a bit bogged down by slow pacing. If you love gothic body horror and don't mind a slower burn, it's definitely worth a read!”“This was a fun, witchy read with lovely feminine rage and much deserved revenge.
At times the book felt a little YA simply because of the age range of the characters… but overall I enjoyed the book, the characters and what the book explored: misogyny, women empowering themselves so they can feel ‘safe enough’ m king in the world.
I definitely would recommend this book just know it’s a bit gruesome at times but overall it’s funny , sweet and touching.”
