The Immortal Irishman
ByPublisher Description
In the New York Times bestseller The Immortal Irishman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Timothy Egan illuminates the dawn of the great Irish American story, with all its twists and triumphs, through the life of one heroic man.
A dashing young orator during the Great Hunger of the 1840s, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony for life. But two years later he was “back from the dead” and in New York, instantly the most famous Irishman in America. Meagher’s rebirth included his leading the newly formed Irish Brigade in many of the fiercest battles of the Civil War. Afterward, he tried to build a new Ireland in the wild west of Montana — a quixotic adventure that ended in the great mystery of his disappearance, which Egan resolves convincingly at last.
“This is marvelous stuff. Thomas F. Meagher strides onto Egan's beautifully wrought pages just as he lived — powerfully larger than life. A fascinating account of an extraordinary life.”—Daniel James Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Facing the Mountain

“After reading a book last year by Timothy Egan that was one of my favorite biographies ever- “The Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher” - I was excited to read another biography of his. I knew I didn’t want to rush my reading so I took my time to savor the chapters of “The Immortal Irishman.” This story covers the extraordinary life of Thomas Meager, an Irish poet and orator who gave up a life of wealth and comfort to fight for Irish independence during the Potato Famine years. Labeled as a traitor to English rule, he narrowly escapes a death sentence and becomes an exile in Tasmania. Determined to live on his own terms, he escapes confinement in Tasmania and flees to the United States where he becomes a General of an Irish Brigade in the Union army. After many near misses on the battlefield, his final years take him to the Montana Territory where he serves as Territory Governor. His mysterious death opens and closes the book. I loved the beginning chapters of this book that gave context to the Irish battle for independence after hundreds of years of English rule and an understanding of the factors that led to the Potato Famine. I generally don’t love books on the Civil War so those chapters weren’t my favorite but I loved the Irish setting and the way Ireland influenced Meager’s life and worldview. Egan’s books are always a well researched story and I look forward to what his next book release will be.”

“probably a 4-4.5 for what it is, but a 3.5 in general. it’s about as juicy as a LONG biography can be, but still felt dense and at times unnecessary with the level of description provided.
i DID learn a lot though! about the oppression of the irish by england, the potato famine, the political dynamics around the civil war, immigrant attitudes around the abolition of slavery, etc.”
