The Hundred Years War Reviews

3.5
“This book is a bit like a 2nd year history course, in that it assumes familiarity with the chronological and historical context for the war (though the intro does offer a recap), and focuses on tracing how various underlying social themes developed during and because of the war(s). Eg, how the concepts of chivalry and nobility evolved, or how parliamentarism vs avsolutism took root, or what it was like to suffer through these times as a common soldier or peasant. In other words, it's inherently a somewhat niche book targeting someone who's already familiar with basic history, which tends to be framed as a linear narrative from one big date to another with a big slant towards famous names and military battles, and who would like to revisit this or that topic from a more granular and society-oriented perspective. As long as you're in the market for that, this is actually a very well written, researched and structured book, filled with plenty of interesting insights and random bits of trivia (eg, you can learn how the idea of indentured servitude" came about and why it's called "indentured" in Chapter 6). Easily deserves at least 4 stars, and I would guess that the many 3s it got were from people who expected a more foundational, military-oriented survey.”
