The Hundred Secret Senses
ByPublisher Description
The "wisest and most captivating novel" (Boston Globe) from the author of the bestselling The Joy Luck Club and The Backyard Bird Chronicles
Set in San Francisco and in a remote village of Southwestern China, Amy Tan's The Hundred Secret Senses is a tale of American assumptions shaken by Chinese ghosts and broadened with hope. In 1962, five-year-old Olivia meets the half-sister she never knew existed, eighteen-year-old Kwan from China, who sees ghosts with her "yin eyes." Decades later, Olivia describes her complicated relationship with her sister and her failing marriage, as Kwan reveals her story, sweeping the reader into the splendor and violence of mid-nineteenth century China. With her characteristic wisdom, grace, and humor, Tan conjures up a story of the inheritance of love, its secrets and senses, its illusions and truths.

“Amy Tan is a writer whose work connects my mom and I. I first read The Joy Luck Club several years ago on her recommendation, and have been hearing about this “ghost” book for the same amount of time, but never started. Like with taking any recommendation from people you love, you learn things about them at a very deep level; I always feel like I understand my mom more when I engage with media she has once enjoyed. I really thought this book was going to be at least a four-star read, but I did NOT enjoy Olivia and Simon’s relationship like. At all. And I found myself wishing for more Kwan, for more of her stories (Olivia, if you don’t want an older sister that loves you beyond lives and time and space and cherishes you, send her over????). And Olivia was just… Ugh. The last few sections felt rushed, and it was all almost Hallmark-tooth-rotting slap-a-bow-on-it ta-da!!!! The end! Did not like that, either. Tan’s writing is immersive, fluid, and beautiful; but I wanted more from this.”
