Publisher Description

The Hum and the Shiver by Alex Bledsoe is an enchanting tale of music and magic older than the hills, and the first book in the wondrous Tufa series. . . .

"Imagine a book somewhere between American Gods and Faulkner. In brief: a good book. Absolutely worth your time."—Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author, on The Hum and the Shiver

Private Bronwyn Hyatt had left her small town of Needsville for the army to escape the pressures of her mystical Tufa family legacy. She returns a lone survivor after a disastrous attack overseas, wounded in body and spirit.

But cryptic omens warn of impending tragedy, and a restless haint lurks nearby, waiting to reveal Bronwyn's darkest secrets. Now Bronwyn finds the greatest battle lies right in her backyard, especially as young minister with too much curiosity arrives in town. If she makes the wrong choice, the consequences could be deadly for all the Tufa. . . .

The Hum and the Shiver Reviews

3.5
“Wow. I did not know much about this book when I started it. I had no idea what I was getting ready to read, and even halfway in I was surprised when the realization came. I definitely enjoyed reading this one, and plan to add this to my “Series to Finish” list. The characters had life in them, and the story was well told. Very active the whole way through, and from what I know of Appalachia, pretty accurate.”
“I enjoyed this book quite a lot once I got settled into the world. I feel like Bronwyn's father was unduly harsh on her through the whole book considering what she had been through during her time in service to the army. Bronwyn was clearly a wild child as a teenager, but going off to war was worse and she gets put down for it often. This book is definitely laying the groundwork for explaining a larger world of the Tufa as it left me with a few questions. 1 what is the war at home? 2 what happened to her in the war that a ghost felt she needed to remember? 3 will she remember in the next book? Or is it no longer relevant? 4 what is the meaning of the painting? Who created the painting? 5 how old is this "little girl" that people keep talking about? It sounds like she was reincarnated with her memories. Since this is the first in a series, I know that these are things to draw more readers in. I would have liked the war information revealed on if it was relevant or not. Will the ghost be coming back? Was something faked? Was one of her team to blame for her attack in the war because she is Tufa? Did she reveal her singing?(I very much doubt the last one.) Or has this book closed her life outside of the Tufa? That little bit being tied up would have helped me to end this book I think. Or! I missed something. If so, please let me know. I would like the comfort of thinking she doesn't have to ever relive that.”
