The House of Quiet by Kiersten White digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide comes a dark fantasy about a girl who will risk everything—posing as a maid, confronting powerful enemies, and unraveling deadly secrets—all to save her missing sister from the enigmatic House of Quiet.

“A brilliant, imaginative fantasy.” —Allison Saft, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wings of Starlight

"A chilling, dystopic world enclosed in a locked-room mystery." —Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

To save her sister, she must enter the House.

In the middle of a deadly bog sits the House of Quiet. It’s a place for children whose Procedure triggered powers too terrible to be lived with—their last hope for treatment. No one knows how they’re healed or where they go afterward.

Birdie has begged, bargained, and blackmailed her way inside as a maid, determined to find her missing sister, Magpie. But what she discovers is more mysteries. Instead of the destitute children who undergo the Procedure in hopes of social advancement, the house brims with aristocratic teens wielding strange powers they never should have been burdened with.

Though Birdie wants to ignore them, she can’t help being drawn to stoic and silent Forest, charmed by clever River, and concerned for the youngest residents. And with fellow maid Minnow keeping tabs on everything Birdie does, danger is everywhere.

In her desperate search for Magpie, Birdie unearths terrifying threats and devastating truths, forcing her to confront just how much she’s willing to sacrifice to save her own sister. Because in the House of Quiet, if you find what’s lurking beneath . . . you lose everything.

Unravel the mystery. Ignite the rebellion.

The House of Quiet Reviews

“I didn’t know where this book was going at first, it starts off with very vague straight to the point plot of a sister looking for her missing sister and a lot of filler information that eventually becomes relevant when the pieces start coming together. Birdie is such a strong and badass character, she will do anything for the ones she loves and will not give up. Minnow was a loyal and badass character as well. Every character honestly was well written and played a pivotal role in the story and also in the found family of the house of quiet. There’s a lot of horrors that go on in this house that no one knows about but the benefits only the elites get to experience. Towards the end the plot really gets going and getting to know the whole truth of this house and the people who created this makes you feel bad for the kids and the maids that went into this blind and only suffer to benefit the rich and those who seek power and riches. I loved the romance between Birdie and Forest the truth of their beginning and how Forest didn’t give up on her and fought to be by her side 🥰 river and Minnow also have a beautiful relationship, river is so clever and is a ride or die and I love her! Dawn was probably my favorite! Seeing how all these characters used something that was done to them without their consent and take the consequences of their new found powers to help each other and destroy those who did this to them is so empowering. They became a found family that created loyalty and love for these outcast. I ended up really liking the book halfway through and to the end. The beginning was a bit slow but it built up the story.”
“Thanks to PRH Audio & Delacorte Press for the gifted copy! This YA dark fantasy was such a great read! The worldbuilding pulled me right in, from the eerie House of Quiet to the chilling mysteries woven through every hallway. I listened to the audiobook and the narration truly brought each character to life, adding so much emotion and depth to the story. Birdie’s determination to find her sister kept me hooked the entire time, and I loved how layered and atmospheric this story felt. The mix of dark magic and haunting secrets gave it the perfect balance of heart and horror. The character development was on point and I loved how the power of friendship is weaved into this story. I would’ve loved slightly more closure at the end, but that didn’t take away from how captivating and well written this was. I highly recommend this one to fans of moody, character driven YA fantasy with a sinister edge.”
