“In The Horseman on the Roof, we follow Angelo, a 25-year-old colonel in the Italian army, born in Piedmont, who crosses the border fleeing to France on his way to Manosque, after having killed a baron in a duel. We are talking about the 1830s, when Italy was occupied by Austria, and in Italy there was a group of people who thought about revolution to gain independence and unify the country. Angelo was part of this revolutionary group. Angelo, on his journey to Manosque, has to pass through several villages, realizing that they are deserted and full of bodies due to a cholera epidemic. Along his journey, Angelo comes into contact with different people and comes into direct contact with the disease, showing an uncharacteristic impassivity towards it. In Manosque he will be pursued by citizens who accuse him of poisoning the waters, having to hide on the roofs of the city. And it is here that he will meet a young woman who will become his traveling companion back to Italy. As travel was prohibited, these two had to go around the main roads, dodging the army barriers. However, they were not always successful. Will Angelo make it back to Italy? You'll have to read to find out. I loved this book! The adventures that Angelo goes through and all the people he meets along his journey made the reading more and more interesting. Angelo comes across as a resolute, practical man, not afraid to face things and a presence of mind with an observant sense, characteristic of a member of the army. It's an open ending but hopeful, however I was expecting romance which didn't happen in this book. But it's still worth the read!”
