The Hollow Places
By T. KingfisherPublisher Description
A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle’s house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the “innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling” (Mira Grant, Nebula Award–winning author) The Twisted Ones.
Pray they are hungry.
Kara finds the words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring this peculiar area—only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts…and the more one fears them, the stronger they become.
With her distinctive “delightfully fresh and subversive” (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, The Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won’t be able to put down.

What worked for me
Characters
The characters were great. Kara is an interesting character because she is trying to start a new life, and the museum is her way of doing something for her post-divorce life. Simon was great because he was a bit nerdy, and he knew a lot of facts which I loved. Kara’s uncle was great as well. I also loved the journey of this book.
Writing
I’ve read four books by T. Kingfisher, and this one was my second favorite. I love the vibe of the Musume and all the exhibits there. The portal fantasy element was also very well done; I loved it so much. The characters in the fantasy world were a combination of funny and sweet.
What could have been better
Plot
I still loved the story of this. I just wasn’t as engaged in it as I thought I could be if the story was more. I just felt the story was a little slow at times.
Romance
I get that this wasn’t a romance story. I just wanted more of romance between Kara and Simon as a treat. I saw the start of romance which I wish was explored more.”
