Publisher Description

The High King by Lloyd Alexander

When the most powerful weapon in the land of Prydain falls into the hands of Arawn, Lord of the Land of Death, Taran and Prince Gwydion rally an army to stand up to the dark forces.

The companions' last and greatest quest is also their most perilous. The biting cold of winter is upon them, adding to the danger they already face. Their journey, fraught with battle and bloodshed, ends at the very portal of Arawn's stronghold. There, Taran is faced with the most crucial decision of his life.

In this breathtaking Newbery Medal-winning conclusion to The Chronicles of Prydain, the faithful friends face the ultimate war between good and evil.

“Given that this is the last book in the series, I am sad to say that it's also the one I liked the least. This one was mostly focused on the war and, as always, I am not a fan of those stories. I also don't tend to like when all of the characters of past books get reunited for the big finale since it takes the focus out of the main characters to become about the bigger picture. One of the reasons why I didn't like this book as much is because I prefer personal stories instead of the ones focused on big picture impacts. While the other books followed Taran really closely, this one had an odd chapter where Taran was absent. It is more noticeable because it's not common and it was obviously done to serve the plot without the limits of following just one character. I would have preferred it to be done in some other way. Besides what I mentioned, there were some choices towards the end that I didn't like, but those are spoilers. I did enjoy that in the end this was a story about magic leaving the world and somehow I was not expecting that even though past books referred to enchanters as being evil. What I liked about the book was, as usual, the writing style and the characters (for the most part). This book has some really good quotes and I still really like the main cast. Overall, this ending was not my favourite, but it wasn't bad. The series as a whole is 4/5 stars and well worth reading.”
