Publisher Description

A chilling Gothic mystery from the bestselling author of Richard & Judy Book Club hit The Cold Season, perfect for fans of Susan Hill, The Coffin Path and The Silent Companions - where superstition and myth bleed into real life with tragic consequences.

'The twist is brilliant' Daily Mail

'Intriguing and unsettling' Sunday Express

Pretty Lizzie Higgs is gone, burned to death on her own hearth - but was she really a changeling, as her husband insists?

Albie Mirralls met his cousin only once, in 1851, within the grand glass arches of the Crystal Palace, but unable to countenance the rumours that surround her murder, he leaves his young wife in London and travels to Halfoak, a village steeped in superstition.

Albie begins to look into Lizzie's death, but in this place where the old tales hold sway and the 'Hidden People' supposedly roam, answers are slippery and further tragedy is just a step away.

'
A skilful blend of the supernatural and the psychological . . . If you enjoyed Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and the Woman in Black by Susan Hill, this is one for you' Mature Times

“This is SUCH a good book might be one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to so far the storyline is very engaging it really pulls you into the land and the relationship and turmoil amongst the characters.”
“I can't tell if Albie is supposed to be an unlikeable character (which I enjoy when it's done well), or if we're supposed to have at least some sympathy for him, but I had zero. His obsession with someone he met one time for a few hours at most is completely unbelievable. I enjoyed the writing style overall, and it was pretty atmospheric, but it definitely dragged at parts. That, along with some of the dialects that were accurate but kind of a pain, made this a little rough to get through. The ending was confusing, Albie's constant flip-flopping was frustrating, and there were so many parts that were a little too convenient or ridiculous. I think the base of a good story was there, and I didn't hate it, but it has too many issues for me to give more than a 2.5 - 3.”
“I love how this book plays with your expectations and perspective about what the "real" story is. Also, the descriptions are pretty impressive.”
