Q: Do I have to buy the ebook to participate in a book club?

No, you don’t have to buy the ebook to participate, but we do recommend it to get the most out of your club. There are several premium social reading features that are only available when you buy the ebook, like annotations, reactions, comment threads, resources, discussion prompts, and more, all embedded right in the text. It’s a unique and immersive way to read.

Q: Why can’t I buy the ebook on the app?

It’s annoying, we know. App store rules prevent us from selling directly in the app, so for now you can only purchase ebooks on our website. Don’t worry: when you purchase an ebook on the web, it’s automatically added to your bookshelf in the app.

Q: How is Fable’s reader different from Kindle?

Kindle is a straightforward e-reader; Fable is an interactive e-reader that includes social features inside the ebooks. Q: Are book clubs free to join on Fable?

Most of our clubs are completely free to join. The only exceptions are clubs marked as “Premium” or “Career Development,” which do require a fee. You can find out more on each club’s detail page.

Q: How do I start a book club with this book on Fable?

“I truly loved The Paper Menagerie, and I was excited to read this second collection of short stories. I think the book was beautifully written with excellent prose, and a nice variety of stories, never feeling as though they were repetitive. Lieu also varied the length of the stories which I liked as well. My favorite short stories were The Hidden Girl, The Gods Will Not be Chained trilogy, Seven Birthdays, and The Message.”

“Oof, this collection was such a huge letdown. To be clear, I don’t think any of the stories are objectively bad. They’re just insanely lackluster compared to any story in The Paper Menagerie collection. I don’t necessarily Ken Liu’s writing style is all that different between the two collections either, but Paper Menagerie had so much heart, whereas every story in The Hidden Girl felt like an extended thought experiment. The stories were smart, but so utterly lifeless and flat. For me, Paper Menagerie’s greatest strength as a collection was the overarching exploration of East Asian culture and history, which is only minimally present in The Hidden Girl, and The Hidden Girl as a collection is much more driven by multiple stories surrounding the philosophical and scientific question of how humanity would be impacted by translating to a digital form. Honestly, The Hidden Girl may have just been too sci-fi for me. Two stories I would recommend from The Hidden Girl: The Reborn (warning: really fucking weird) Byzantine Empathy”

About Ken Liu

Ken Liu is an award-winning American author of speculative fiction. His collection, The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories, has been published in more than a dozen languages. Liu’s other works include The Grace of Kings, The Wall of Storms, The Veiled Throne, and a second collection The Hidden Girl and Other Stories. He has been involved in multiple media adaptations of his work including the short story “Good Hunting,” adapted as an episode in Netflix’s animated series Love, Death + Robots; and AMC’s Pantheon, adapted from an interconnected series of short stories. “The Hidden Girl,” “The Message,” and “The Cleaners” have also been optioned for development. Liu previously worked as a software engineer, corporate lawyer, and litigation consultant. He frequently speaks at conferences and universities on topics including futurism, cryptocurrency, the history of technology, and the value of storytelling. Liu lives with his family near Boston, Massachusetts.
