“Living that close to death made you kind of crazy.”
Anxious Face with sweat“More often than not in rural communities, there's one tradition that just defies explanation for folks not from there. And for kids up north of Lawford, out in bear country, it's the Hanging Game- a brush with death meant to give you a glimpse into your future... and keep Hangjaw appeased for the taking of his creatures. What I loved most about this story was the narrator told it like I'd hear a family member out here tell a story where I'm from so it captured the Southern gothic vibe in a way that was accurate without being too trope-y... Skye was just telling you how it is and what keeps her up at night. A wonderful quick read about the mystery that gets built up around traditions, whether it's for the better to carry them on... and a reminder that Hangjaw's always gonna see to getting his blood price paid.”
