“Turns out, toxic masculinity is…. Well, toxic. The main character Trent was soooooo one dimensionally a piece of actual garbage from basically page one. He was set to “asshole” from the jump so even as his behaviors worsened, there really were not any surprises or shocks. He started terrible and ended terrible. I’m not sure if this was inspired by or an homage to The Shining, but it felt so much like a less successful and watered down retread of the Stephen King masterpiece. I genuinely really appreciate a retelling done well, but this was hollow and paint by numbers to me. Not even the modernization with the “Black Mirror” style inclusion of a mysterious vlogger/social media personality could set this apart. Ultimately, the (supposed) source material was fantastic. Following those story beats made this readable before I ever opened the book. But, the story did not feel genuine or unique like Cutter’s other works.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure how to even feel about this book. It’s not an easy read and Cutter and Sullivan make sure to really push the imagery in some scenes. The scene with the too small drain pipe for example is a horrific visual that will stay with me. However, horror novels normally make me think about today’s real life horrors and misogyny is a very central theme in this novel. The belief that men have to look a certain way and act a certain way to be a “real man” is what destroys the real people in this book. Very unique read but can be hard to understand at some points. Makes you think and wince in disgust at the same time.”
