The Hammer

By K. J. Parker
The Hammer by K. J. Parker digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Gignomai is the youngest brother in the current generation of met'Oc, a once-noble family exiled on an island for their role in a vaguely remembered civil war. On this island, a colony was founded seventy years ago. The plan was originally for the colonists to mine silver, but there turned out not to be any. Now, an uneasy peace exists on the island, between the colonists and the met'Oc. The met'Oc are tolerated, in spite of occasional cattle stealing raids, since they alone possess the weapons considered necessary protection against the island's savages. Gignomai is about to discover exactly what it is expected of him, and what it means to defy his family. He is the hammer who will provide the spark that will ignite a brutal and bloody war.

“The Hammer by K.J. Parker is a coming-of-age story about Gignomai, the youngest brother in the met’Oc family. A once-noble family that has been exiled for the part they played in a long-forgotten civil. The colonists were meant to mine for silver but there wasn’t any and now there is an uneasy peace between the colonists and the met’Oc family. Gignomai is getting older and learning what is expected of him and what it means to defy his family. The character-building is done skillfully and the interactions between the characters feel authentic and complement the atmosphere and the world-building. Overall the pacing is pretty slow and there were some sections that I had to push myself through to get to the good parts that I knew were coming. At times the plot didn’t seem to be going anywhere but then bam, vengeance and justice kicked in and it felt like I had jumped into a Joe Abercrombie book. 3.5 stars. If the pacing had been a bit faster overall it probably would’ve made it to a 4 star. I have a YouTube channel, 'BookandBuJo'. Check it out - BookAndBuJo - YouTube BookAndBuJo - YouTube”
“The Hammer Gignomai youngest son of the met’Oc family. He is intelligent, resourceful and determined. There is a focus on family and the consequences of defying them. Gignomai is someone you can believe in and root for to break free to live his own life. Yet the attempt to break free reveals much stronger familial ties than he thought possible. However, a determined Gignomai sets in motion a series of actions that have dire consequences. Actions that lay bare the length a person will go to stay free. For all of Gignomai’s smart and clever attitude and seemingly clear common sense thinking, just how far will Gignomai go to see justice? Overall a brilliant read, with a rather unexpected ending.”
