Publisher Description

The second adventure in the Bartimaeus trilogy finds our young apprentice magician Nathaniel working his way up the ranks of the government, when crisis hits. A seemingly invulnerable clay golem is making random attacks on London. Nathaniel and the all-powerful, totally irreverent djinni, Bartimaeus, must travel to Prague to discover the source of the golem's power. In the ensuing chaos, readers will chase a dancing skeleton across London's skyline, encounter the horror of the dreaded Night Police, witness a daring kidnapping, and enter the Machiavellian world of the magician's government. Eventually, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus have to go head to head with the fearsome golem before the surprise identity of his master is finally revealed.

“This made for as good of a listen as the first book. Bartimaeus’s sarcastic perspective on events was entertaining as expected. I’m curious to see how the story concludes in book 3.”
Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“I want to talk about what I really enjoy in this book—Bartimaeus. Honestly, I’m mostly here for him. I love the chapters from his perspective; his take on humans, especially magicians, is both hilarious and spot-on. The way he reacts to Jakob when they first meet illustrates how we could appreciate our differences if we weren’t conditioned by a narrow standard of beauty. Nathaniel, or Mandrake, is difficult to like as he continues to absorb the elitism, arrogance, and foolishness of the magicians. I have to remind myself that he’s just 14 years old and lacks parental or moral guidance. In the previous book, Mrs. Underwood and Ms. Lutyens were able to show him empathy and provide direction. However, in this book, he is surrounded by greedy, arrogant, self-serving magicians who lack a moral compass. On the other hand, Kitty is an interesting and admirable character, and I enjoyed learning more about her and her character's growth. I could empathize with her anger, frustration, and feelings of hopelessness, as well as her resilience, determination, quick thinking, and humanity. There were moments when I couldn’t believe the magicians couldn’t come up with some simple, creative solutions for their problems, considering everything they had at their disposal. At first, it felt like a plot hole, but then I realized that when you live in a world where you only command others to do your bidding, you kind of stop thinking creatively and lose your edge. Bartimaeus points this out at one point too. By the end of the book, I’m already looking forward to reading the next one!”
