“I really enjoyed this read! It’s definitely different from “The Letter for the King” and “Secrets of the Wild Wood,” but still entertaining.
It reads to me almost like a series of short stories about twin brothers, rather than having one overarching narrative.
Well worth a read!”
“A classic children's book, and I was delighted by it.
It's a story of a twin and their adventures, split into tales. each tale describes an adventure they go through, and since it's a book intended for children, it seems to have a lesson at the end of each tale or a moral lesson. All of their adventures rely heavily on the fact that they're twins and the situations they find themselvs in because of that, but by 80% of the book, I was done and frankly bored with yet another story of how people were tricked by the fact that there's two people with the same face.
I wished there were more to the adventures than just them being twinsm but I think it's a good collection for kids, and I'd advise for it to be read on a long period of time, with a few days break between each tale, so as they don't blend in together”
About Tonke Dragt
Tonke Dragt was born in Jakarta in 1930 and spent most of her childhood in Indonesia. When she was twelve, she was interned in a camp run by the Japanese occupiers, where she wrote (with a friend) her very first book using begged and borrowed paper. Her family moved to the Netherlands after the war and, after studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Dragt became an art teacher. She published her first book in 1961, followed a year later by The Letter for the King, which won the Children's Book of the Year award and has been translated into sixteen languages. Dragt was awarded the State Prize for Youth Literature in 1976 and was knighted in 2001.
Laura Watkinson studied medieval and modern languages at Oxford, and taught English around the world before returning to the UK to take a Master’s in English and Applied Linguistics, and a postgraduate certificate in literary translation. She is now a full-time translator from Dutch, Italian and German, and has translated a number of titles for Pushkin Children’s Books including Winter in Wartime, Lampie, and Letter for the King.
