When the wizards of Unseen University first created Roundworld, they were so concerned with discovering the rules of this new universe that they overlooked its inhabitants entirely. “Unfortunately, for my first foray in Terry Pratchett I think I picked a connoisseur‘s item, one that I don’t think I’ve quite developed a taste for yet.
The structure of this book is really cool on paper, but in execution it was disappointing. Odd chapters are a frame narrative that follows characters I’m sure you’re familiar with: Mustrum Ridcully, Rincewind, Ponder Stibbons, and their misadventures on Roundworld.
Even chapters discuss what is going on scientifically, philosophically, and metaphysically in each of the odd chapters.
While there were things I loved about Pratchett’s commentary, especially that stories are neccesary to our existence as humans and that they shouldn’t be scoffed at, the even chapters could get pretty dry.
It was worse because the odd chapters tended to be much longer than the frame narrative. I am certainly not saying I don’t like Pratchett, I’m so excited to read “Guards! Guards!”, but I think I picked up the wrong Discworld book as an introduction to his writing.”
