Publisher Description

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity -- or wipe it out in this USA Today bestselling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Expressionless Face“I almost DNF this book. The only reason I kept reading was so I could mark three books at completed for the month of January. I thought it would get better the longer I read, it didn’t. All of the characters are unlikable.”
Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“Originally, I read this book as it's similar to The Last Of Us, and I won't lie and say I enjoyed pointing out the similarities. But this book is unique in many ways, and it really highlights the inconvenience of societal collapse, even when it gets weird (seriously guys, the hygiene 😭). Melanie and Ms. Justineaus relationship really tugged at my heartstrings. Who cares if this kid could save the word with a potential cure? That's her kid. Anyways, despite the lack of my beloved wife Ellie Williams, I was rooting for Melanie from the start, and despite being so young, was so badass. (Just got a huge rush of deja-vu, like I've written this exact review before. Maybe In a dream.) I'll definitely dream about this book. Love it to pieces.”
