“Doctor Watson and Sherlock Holmes have been roommates for a very short while and are doing their best to make ends meet. This is in the days before Watson's tomes have made Sherlock famous. An older woman comes to them asking them to please find out what happened to her son, a sailor who disappeared during the Boer War. The authorities have branded him a traitor, and she is eager to clear his name.
There is, of course, more to the story. The disappearance of a sailor leads to intrigue, cover-ups and a connection to the death of former PM Disraeli. Watson and Holmes are both waylaid frequently throughout the course of the story and subjected to physical beat downs. Someone somewhere thinks they are getting too close to... something.
I found it amusing that there are vague references to Mycroft throughout the book while hiding the fact that Holmes has a 'connection' that he won't talk about.
As far as Holmes pastiches go, this was very entertaining. There were a few instances that didn't ring true with the original, but overall it was an entertaining read.”
