The Foxglove King

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this lush, romantic epic fantasy series from a New York Times bestselling author, a young woman’s secret power to raise the dead plunges her into the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King’s royal court.

When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city.

Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die.

Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne'er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society.

But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

The Foxglove King Reviews

3.5
“There’s a lot of unique and creative ideas in this book, and I really wanted to love it, but it felt a little disjointed and that things were sort of forced to fit together in the end. I did like the characters and was more intrigued by their personal relationships then some of the bigger plot points. I felt torn the whole time reading this with really wanting to get into it but sobering was just falling flat for me personally. Still interesting ideas though and prefer something original even if it’s not perfect than something predictable”
“I don’t know how I feel about this book. it took about 200 pages for me to feel like I cared about the characters or plot … and that’s not to say this book is bad; it just didn’t hit the way I thought it would. I loved the romance and the “love triangle”… god the tension in this book had me screaming. Now, the things I didn’t like though? I felt like the plot moved too slowly and wasn’t enticing enough. I feel like I had to power through most of this book. From page 200-390 - loved the book, I loved the found family aspects and how the love triangle developed. The ending just wasn’t there. The ending wasn’t bad but it felt so anticlimactic even though it really wasn’t? Usually after book 1 in a series, i immediately want to jump into book 2 and get answers but with this I don’t think I want to … (unless convinced otherwise tbh).”
