“I got my hands on one of the uncorrected proof copies of this book, so my review is for this specific advanced reader copy from September 2020. I cannot speak for the final version of the text, but this one was delightful. I love a good mystery, and I love books about books! I also love learning new words, and this author has a hefty lexicon. Above all else, I love learning about niche topics that you can tell the author cares deeply about. This is positively dripping in Poe lore, and a LOT of detailed descriptions about letterpresses and printing and forgeries. I knew very little about the last three things, so it was cool to get a glimpse of the intricacies of the seedy underbelly of rare book auctions.
This story is very easy to fall into, partially because of the illegal activities, but also because these characters are so multifaceted and interesting. I’m always impressed by authors who can make secondary characters feel as near and dear as the narrator.
The story itself is absolutely wild, but I think that every good mystery is a little unhinged.
I’d say it took me about three hours total. A fun quick read for a Sunday evening. :-)”
