“I found this book at The Book Rescuers in Clearwater, and I thought it would be a good way to dive into a field I have a lot of interest in: evolution.
It was! But I got so much more—for better or worse.
I don’t think I have the proper knowledge in this field to properly “rate” this book of essays. My rating is more so my level of enjoyment from the book.
I think Gould brings up a lot of very important and unique ideas about how we approach science as a fundamental subject, and more specifically evolutionary biology. But oftentimes I found myself getting lost by his hypertechnical word choice and winding sentences.
He also is harsh in how he writes off certain scientists with “failed” hypotheses and inaccurate conclusions. I got the vibe that Gould thinks very highly of himself (I also watched an interview of him on YouTube from a while back, and he spoke kind of pompously too.)
All in all, I think this was a useful collection of esssys to read, and I especially liked the essays on the flamingo’s smile, on Saartjie Baartman, and on theories of dinosaurs’ extinction.”
