The First to Die at the End

By Adam Silvera
The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this prequel to the bestselling phenomenon They Both Die at the End, two new strangers spend a life-changing day together after Death-Cast first makes their fateful calls. #1 New York Times bestseller!

It’s the night before Death-Cast goes live, and there’s one question on everyone’s mind: Can Death-Cast actually predict when someone will die, or is it just an elaborate hoax?

Orion Pagan has waited years for someone to tell him that he’s going to die. He has a serious heart condition, and he signed up for Death-Cast so he could know what’s coming.

Valentino Prince is restarting his life in New York. He has a long and promising future ahead and he only registered for Death-Cast after his twin sister nearly died in a car accident.

Orion and Valentino cross paths in Times Square and immediately feel a deep connection. But when the first round of End Day calls goes out, their lives are changed forever—one of them receives a call, and the other doesn’t. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together…even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking.

Told with acclaimed author Adam Silvera’s signature bittersweet touch, this story celebrates the lasting impact that people have on each other and proves that life is always worth living to the fullest.

“Just finished this at exactly 12:17 am and I’m in tears I can’t stop crying thanks A LOT 😭🥊”
“… what the fuck? i swear to god i am THIS CLOSE to giving this TRAINWRECK one star. this has got to be one of the worst written books. i have read in recent times. possibly one of the worst and most poorly written books i’ve read and finished PERIOD. i don’t even know where to start but grab yourself a cup of coffee or some wine IDEFK because i. have got to RANT. about this. this. THIS FUCKERY. ahem. let’s get into it - i think this book might be my nemesis. i hated this. so much. worst experience of my goddamn life. finally free! i’m gonna be honest i finished this literally only to write an angry review LMAO. i’m so sorry but WHAT HAPPENED? i adored the first one but this was just a mess!! i dislike every single character, the dialogue is so forced and poorly written, it just doesn’t feel genuine. i honestly zoned out so many times. just a very meh read. i got through it easily enough it was entertaining and bearable but i hated it. compared to the first one this was just. terrible. and like i love love at first sight and loved the way it was portrayed in the first book! this just didn’t do it for me, it annoyed me instead. and i didn’t get attached to the characters at all, i didn’t feel we got a chance to, because before we could, everything was alrdy so STUPID plot wise. like valentino WHAT ARE YOU DOING. something i lowkey adored about the first book were the "flawed" parts of the writing. the writing is so millennial, but to me it does feel REAL enough, especially considering the time it was written. i loved the WAY rufus and mateo met, loved the discussions of death and death anxiety, i loved, loved, LOVED it. but this just missed the mark entirely for me. it felt childish and not genuine at all! it had no depth, it was rushed and forced. it was different with rufus and mateo because they met in a different way KNOWING they’d both die - and that created so many beautiful conversations. this just felt like it was written ONLY because of the success of the first book. the "love" between rufus and mateo also felt as genuine as it could be taking the world and circumstances into account. it was sweet, it was wholesome and pure, but this was just so. so disappointing. this is the love at first sight trope written in the worst way possible! it is so unnecessarily cringe and like i get it’s unrealistic given the universe but COME ON! this was just ridiculous. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN?! YOU JUST- YOU. GRRRRRRR!!! what. was. that. ending. i can’t even tell you. so terribly paced, so strange, odd, terrible, TERRIBLE!!! the sudden and fast deaths in the first book were different, this was just plain STUPID. i zoned out during the entire ending. like i don’t even care for what happened to valentino, i can’t properly explain what. happened. because it was just. not executed properly at ALL, and i was so. so over the book at that point. ALSO WHY DID DAHLIA HAVE TO BE THE CREATOR OF THE LAST FRIEND COME ON THIS IS SO. LAZY. let’s just address the horrible writing. let’s go over some quotes, shall we? and mind you these are all from the last few pages of the book. ahem. "take me home valentino." WE’VE ALREADY HEARD THAT ONE WE GET IT STOP MILKING IT!!! the ending was so just "friendship is magic" like what WERE THOSE INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES?! my heart, his heart, our heart PLS STOP IMMEDIATELY!!! this could’ve been so good if it was PROPERLY EXECUTED! "valentino’s heart shaped lips shut me the fuck up." "i hate talking shit about my home bro." "my boyfriend YEAH BOYFRIEND and what? is in my house." "that’s some king shit." "welcome to the o-zone." "big facts." ??? LAZY!!! this felt like a wattpad fic. i wanted ao3 DAMN IT! it feels like a filler episode of a show. i don’t know! i really like the universe, but definitely think this should’ve been a standalone. idk if i want to pick up the third one lmao this was just painful 😭✨🧍‍♀️ the only parts where i genuinely LOCKED IN were the rufus parts. like i was zoned out had no idea what was happening but then rufus was there??? and i nearly screamed??? AND THEN I WAS BREWING COFFEE AND HE. HE!!! "death cast did not call rufus because he isn’t dying today" IM SOBBING. TAKE MY HEART (too soon?) ONLY GOOD PART OF THE BOOK. RUFUS ILYSM!!! i cannot tell you the plot of this book. i rlly tried but. WHAT WAS THIS. please just read the first one and skip this one. it’s not worth it. it’s not. good. no emotional attachment, couldn’t care less. i’m so glad it’s over now phew. fav scene of the entire book? ahem - "if i had stayed in arizona, i wouldn’t have met my first boyfriend." "boyfriend?" "if that’s okay with you." "hell yeah boyfriend." we kiss. "BUT THEY JUST MET?!" sums it up pretty well.”
