If you love Star Trek (in any capacity), and you also love hearing Behind The Scenes (BTS) stories of how the shows were made, then this is a perfect duo of books for you to read.
The first book dealt with Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). This was the series that I grew up with. Watching synidicated reruns of this series everyday at dinnertime five days a week. I cannot tell you how many times I've watched the 79 episodes of this series. AND, even to this day, I will pop-on and watch an episode. So good.
Now, this second book dealt with everything else. Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) and the movies, Deep Space Nine (DS9), Voyager (VOY), Enterprise (ENT)...the Rick Berman era. This was when I was a young adult, newly married and with our young kids. Our kids grew up with Star Trek, too.
It also deals with the JJ Abrams trilogy of movies and all the other Star Trek parodies and influences that it has had in the industry.
I was sad to hear of the in-fighting within the writer's room, with the actors, and the higher up's, but I guess...to make good TV, you also have to fight for your vision of what Star Trek IS and is NOT.
I enjoyed the Rick Berman era. Now, looking back at that time...for us Old Dogs, it was amazing TV (and it really wasn't amazing all the time, but it was OUR Star Trek).
One of the characters that in EVERY iteration of Star Trek...that I've thought that they've cast perfectly...is for Spock. Obviously, the inimitable Leonard Nimoy, then Zachery Quinto in the JJ Abrams trilogy of films...and that iconic moment he has with HIMSELF, but played with the original Spock, in Leonard Nimoy...is still one of my favourite moments in ALL of Star Trek, and what Ethan Peck has done in Discovery and Strange New Worlds. SO good, by everyone of them IMO.
Not sure how The Next 25 Years book will be like...with Star Trek: Discovery (DISCO), Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds (SNW), and Prodigy. I cannot say that I love everything about the New Star Trek, but in every era of Star Trek...you have this discussion. For myself, I feel that the best thing about Discovery, was Jason Isaacs' Captain Gabriel Lorca and all the implications with that duality, and Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike...and the spin-off series, SNW.
So, I look forward to reading the THIRD book in this series...whenever it is published (around 2041)...what will be the movies and TV series that will be in THAT book? Hmm? Will it still be around? I believe it will. I'm not sure I'll be around, but my kids will enjoy it, at least.
Really enjoyed the nostalgia of this book, and the perspectives of the creatives, the actors and the showrunners...on their spin of the Star Trek storis. Here's to MANY more years of Star Trek.”
