Publisher Description

In 1893, Sherlock Holmes and Henry James come to America together to solve the mystery of the 1885 death of Clover Adams, wife of the esteemed historian Henry Adams -- member of the Adams family that has given the United States two Presidents. Clover's suicide appears to be more than it at first seemed; the suspected foul play may involve matters of national importance.

Holmes is currently on his Great Hiatus -- his three-year absence after Reichenbach Falls during which time the people of London believe him to be deceased. Holmes has faked his own death because, through his powers of ratiocination, the great detective has come to the conclusion that he is a fictional character.

This leads to serious complications for James -- for if his esteemed fellow investigator is merely a work of fiction, what does that make him? And what can the master storyteller do to fight against the sinister power -- possibly named Moriarty -- that may or may not be controlling them from the shadows?

“Rating: ⭐⭐ ½ Genre: Mystery Thriller + Historical This is not the kind of book that I would buy for my library. I got the book from one of my book subscriptions. The author is more known for his fantasy and science fiction books like Hyperion, which I’m interested in grabbing in the near future. The premise of the story is really interesting as it involves the author Henry James as a character and Sherlock Holmes! The novel is set in 1893, in which Holmes fakes his own death but accidentally meets Henry James, and the two of them team up to solve a murder mystery. The deeper the two characters get into the case, the more Holmes starts questioning his existence as a fictional character rather than a real person! The premise and the whole idea behind the book are fascinating. Using historical settings and real characters must’ve required the author to do extensive research. The two main characters are well-written, too. However, the novel has too many problems to overlook. The plot is too complex and, at times, hard to follow. The author strays a lot. I don’t need the background story of every character that is irrelevant to the story. Doing that made the book too long and a tedious experience. There were several occasions that I wanted to DNF it, but I pushed myself to finish it. This was not a good experience, especially to read for an author who is new to me. This has become another book that will leave my shelf to get a new home!”
