“I’m bad at giving spoilers when talking about books so I’ll be vague with my review. For those that have read “The Shadow and Bone” series, when starting off I saw a lot of similarities between Luiza and Alina, both being orphans with powers that have been hidden and both their characters are stubborn and combative. I worried it was going to be just like S&B just with a different setting. However, the charcter dynamics in this story is different along with the politics. In this book we see the struggles of the different social classes and the power and destruction caused by the Spanish Inquisition. Bardugo does a beautiful job world weaving without losing track of the story. Her character's backstories are compelling and Bardugo writes them in a way that lets us watch them grow and makes them feel real. "The Familiar" was so immersive that it brought me through an array of complex emotions as I lived the plot out alongside the characters. This was a good standalone story that left me feeling satisfied. Overall, I really enjoyed the book.”
