“An immersive, sensual experience.” —The New York Times

"Essential." —The Washington Post

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo comes a spellbinding novel set in the Spanish Golden Age.

In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to improve the family's social position.

What begins as simple amusement for the nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced secretary to Spain's king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England's heretic queen—and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the king's favor.

Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the lines between magic, science, and fraud are never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition's wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to survive—even if that means enlisting the help of Guillén Santángel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“It took me a little bit to get into the story, but past the middle point I was committed to it. It was very heartwarming. I must say that as a native Spanish speaker who lives in Spain I think she didn't do a bad job at capturing the atmosphere and the culture, but I found myself a little confused sometimes by the use of random Spanish word here and there. This is probably a me problem. I'm rereading this in Spanish see if it makes a difference.”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Leigh Bardugo has crafted yet another incredible novel that will sit with me in my bones and likely never leave. The story of Luzia was so incredibly compelling, her wit and her heart, you cannot help but root for her through it all. The magic was the most believable I’ve read, raw and so convincingly selfish, I could feel the pull for more through the pages. This story was a journey so immersive I could not free myself from its grip to even think to try to form a theory at where we might be taken. All of her characters struck a chord within me, with their honesty and their sins, their sheer and constant humanness, the loudest above all being a partnership between characters so intense and real in the alcove it carved among the pages that I was left holding my breath until the last chapter. The Familiar is my easiest 5 star of the year.”
