The Fall by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“A cross between The Hot Zone and ’Salem’s Lot.”
Entertainment Weekly

“I cannot wait to see where Del Toro and Hogan take us next.”
—James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of Bloodline

The wait is over! Guillermo del Toro, one of Hollywood’s most popular and imaginative storytellers (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) and Hammett Award-winning thriller writer Chuck Hogan (Prince of Thieves) return with The Fall—the second blood-chilling volume in their critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Strain Trilogy. The Fall picks up where The Strain left off—with a vampiric infection spreading like wildfire across America as a small band of heroes struggles to save the dwindling human race from the vampire plague. Horror fiction and dark fantasy fans will be swept up in this epic story that bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as “Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton.”

Slightly Smiling Face“I have to say, this book was not what I was expecting. I found it a little long, more than it needed to be, and while I did appreciate the moments of character study, (I felt there were more intimate moments of introspection in this book than the last), at times it felt out of place compared to what was happening at the time in the book. Similar to the previous book, there were times where the description was a bit weird, and the writing was, for a lack of a better word corny! But all in all, it definitely moved the story forward enough to get it to the third act, which is the next, and final book in the series. I think the fall is a less superior book to The Strain, mostly because it can feel a little tired in some moments. There is no newness to the vampires, and I really wish the author would’ve talked about how distinct a mature vampire is from a newly formed one. They gloss over it but never truly explain it. I think that would’ve been a really interesting topic to touch on. I also was hoping, and I forgot to mention this in my review of the first book, that the surviving four from the Regis flight would’ve had a bigger role in the plot of the book. The only one that has a big role is Bolivar, who towards the end of this book, is given the power of the Master. Nonetheless I would’ve love to have seen the Lawyer lady Joan Luss become some sort of high ranking vampire, similar to Eichhorst. Also whatever happened to her kids? I really liked the story line of the nanny taking the kids to her house and Joan coming to grab them. That story line didn’t come to fruition. Are we to think that she eventually got to her children? This book was very different from the TV Show. Eichhorst for once is really an ancillary character, whereas in the TV show he’s featured prominently. Also Nora, nor does her mother die in the second book during the trail derailment. And there is no bomb that Zack detonates, but rather a Nuclear plant in long island is made to fail and explode. There is also a little bit more explanation about the origins of the Ancient Ones, and I have a feeling it will have to do with Religion, which I think is unfortunate because one of the things I loved about the first book was how far away from religion the strigoi lore was. Also Palmer is totally shredded to bits in this book, which I was totally OK with. I’ve already started the third book!”
