“lise is descending into a haunting madness, and you’re in the front seat for all of it. it’s my first time reading such brutal poetry on female mental illness.
the "faces" that lise describes—the personas people wear in daily life—is a knife-in-the-heart, uncomfortable truth. her hallucinations are so deeply rooted, suspended somewhere between her two worlds. it’s a painful, honest confrontation of her innermost conflicts.
the way tove ditlevsen writes is artistically brilliant. her depth is staggering and it resonates with me in a way that feels almost too close to home.”
“Avevo tanto amato la trilogia di Copenaghen, ma in questo romanzo breve Tove Ditlevsen non mi ha conquistata. La tematica della salute mentale di una donna tormentata e paranoica è interessante, e probabilmente ci sono elementi di autofiction e parallelismi con la salute mentale dell’autrice stessa, ma la storia l’ho trovata sviluppata malissimo! La narrazione è confusa esattamente come la protagonista, non si riesce a capire cosa è reale e cosa no e tutta la situazione narrata sembra semplicemente surreale e grottesca. Dati i temi, questo libro viene comparato a “La campana di vetro”, ma per me siamo proprio distanti anni luce. Purtroppo non mi è piaciuto, il mio coinvolgimento è stato minimo dall’inizio alla fine e anche i risvolti finali non li ho apprezzati, li ho trovati piuttosto nonsense. Si salva, a tratti, lo stile di scrittura.”
About Tove Ditlevsen
was born in 1917 in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen. Her first volume of poetry was published when she was in her early twenties and was followed by many more books, including the three volumes of the Copenhagen Trilogy:

(1971). She died in 1976.
