He thinks you are the thief…

Shyla is a researcher who resides in the underground desert city of Zirdai, which is ruled by the wealthy Water Prince and brutal Heliacal Priestess. Even though Shyla is sun-kissed - an outcast, considered cursed by the Sun Goddess - she is still renowned for uncovering innumerable archaic facts, lost artefacts, ancient maps, and obscure historical documents. Her quiet life is about to change when Banqui, an archaeologist, enlists her services to find The Eyes of Tamburah: legendary gemstones that bestow great magic on their wielder. These ancient objects can tip the balance of power and give whoever possesses them complete control of the city.

But chaos erupts when The Eyes are stolen soon after they're found - and Shyla is blamed for the theft. Forced to flee, with the Prince's soldiers and the Priestess' deacons on her trail, Shyla must recover the jewels and clear her name. A quest that will unearth secrets even more valuable than The Eyes of Tamburah themselves...

“rating: 4 stars. A thrilling first instalment to a severely underrated trilogy. https://images.gr-assets.com/hostedimages/1637419726ra/32215360.gif I discovered this book by accident in my local bookstore, having previously not even known it existed. I checked GR to see how many ratings it had, and was intrigued, but not surprised, by how few people had read this. Nonetheless, I took a chance and dived into it with little knowledge besides that. And I'm so glad I did. Set in a desert planet, people live in cities underneath the sand to escape the extreme heat from the Sun, especially during it's killing angles. I'll have to admit that I don't fully understand the unit of 'angles,' but I figured it either is equivalent to hours or minutes. I swear I had a different interpretation every few pages. But these I know for sure: ☀️One sun jump = one day ☀️One circuit = one year (360 sun jumps in one circuit) Shyla is a Sun-kissed. This means she as born with light hair and light eyes, and usually sun-kissed babies are left on the surface to die, in order to be "returned" to the Sun Goddess that blessed them. However, she was rescued by monks and that is how she has still managed to live, despite being treated like an outsider by the rest of the city of Zirdai. Zirdai is ruled by the Water Prince and the Heliacal Priestess. When a powerful artefact called the Eyes of Tamburah is stolen, Shyla is suddenly thrust into a complex treasure hunt where everything is not as it seems. The EOT are powerful, which is why both the Water Prince and the Heliacal Priestess are desperate to have it, because it can tip the balance of power in their favour. Following clues and trusting strangers, Shyla risks her life to find this legendary artefact - and the truth of it all. Towards the end there was just so many revelations and secrets unravelling that I swear every few pages I got whiplash. At times I got a little lost, but all I had to do was slow down and stop devouring the pages”
