“I loved reading the first half of this story. There was so much humour and a desire for these four women to find their happiness in San Salvatore. When Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Arbuthnot decide to go to Italy together, as stranger who have just met, to get away from their unhappy marriages and then bringing the young Lady Caroline and the elderly Mrs Fisher with them I thought this was going to be a story of surprising friendships forming. Mrs fisher being so stuck in the past about formality and the correct way things should be done being shocked by the actions of the younger women I found very funny…but the ending, I know it is reflective of the age it is written and probably would never have got to be a “vintage classic” if it had stayed in the realms of female friendships and love, but the men all turned up and ruined it. I felt like the story was basically telling us that a woman can not be truly happy or loved unless she is married to a man.
I did like how Mrs fisher warmed towards Mrs Wilkins at the end but it did take the men turning up for her to let happiness in. I did enjoy the writing and the descriptions of the flowers too.”
“While I don’t love the ways that the men ruined things, this was a very dreamy and delicious summertime book”“This book appeared to have been about women getting time alone without their husbands but then the husbands end up coming?! There was barely any character development and absolutely nothing discussed with the husbands about why the women felt like they needed time to themselves without the men. Bet they all went home back to their boring lives. I expected more from this book.”
