Publisher Description

First published in 1922, “The Enchanted April” by British author Elizabeth von Arnim is the story of four very different English women who spend a month vacationing together in Italy at the Tuscan Villa, San Salvatore. Each finding themselves in need of a holiday from their dreary lives back home, the four women rent an Italian castle on the Mediterranean coast and experience a reawakening in life through their shared realizations and experiences there. While the women vary widely in temperament and taste each struggle with relationships in their lives. Rose Arbuthnot and Lotty Wilkins think they have little in common, but discover they are both doing their best to make their unhappy marriages work. The beautiful but remote Lady Caroline Dester is reexamining the value of her upper crust life in London after losing her only true love in World War I and the elderly and emotionally distant Mrs. Fisher rediscovers the value of friendship and human connection. “The Enchanted April” has remained a popular and heart-warming tale concerning the struggles of life and the rejuvenating power of beauty, hope, and love, in facing those struggles. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

““Beauty made you love, and love made you beautiful.” The last book completed by @firesidereading was The Enchanted April. Prior to it being selected I had never heard of it nor the author, Elizabeth Von Arnim. To me this was the perfect book for this time of year. Everyone’s restless and tired of the dull and damp winter and dreaming of spring . This is an adult fairytale written in 1922 where four women take a trip of a lifetime for one month in April. They travel from dreary London to sunny Italy for ultimate awakening . The writing is lush and flowery, rich in details—so atmospheric. The women arrive in San Salvatore with a yearning . The sunshine and relaxation really gives them and idealist take on life because they have escaped to a beautiful place, a castle , and are able to love and be loved freely an to have connections. There’s one part where one of the women wakes up in a bed, in a room of her own, and is just so pleased and happy about life. I love that Von Arnim had these ideas and dreams for women many years prior to Woolf’s essay with the same type of theme . My one quarrel is that towards the end of the story , the men show up . I thought the vacation was going perfectly fine without them . This is such a sensual and giving book that I absolutely adored . . . . . . #theenchantedapril #elizabethvonarnim #classicliterature #classicbooks #novels #literatura #penguinclassics #ireadclassics #readmorebooks #readersofinstagram #bedtimestories #firesidereading #firesidereadingwithgildart #audiobook #readaloud #readalong #bookclubofinstagram #shereadsalo”
