New York Times–bestselling author Rae Carson makes a triumphant return to the world of her award-winning Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy in this extraordinary stand-alone novel. Fans of Leigh Bardugo, Kendare Blake, and Tomi Adeyemi won’t want to put this book down.

Red Sparkle Stone is a foundling orphan with an odd name, a veiled past, and a mark of magic in her hair. But finally—after years and years of running, of fighting—she is about to be adopted into the royal family by Empress Elisa herself. She’ll have a home, a family. Sixteen-year-old Red can hardly believe her luck. Then, in a stunning political masterstroke, the empress’s greatest rival blocks the adoption, and everything Red has worked for crumbles before her eyes.

But Red is not about to let herself or the empress become a target again. Determined to prove her worth and protect her chosen family, she joins the Royal Guard, the world’s most elite fighting force. It’s no coincidence that someone wanted her to fail as a princess, though. Someone whose shadowy agenda puts everything—and everyone—she loves at risk. As danger closes in, it will be up to Red to save the empire. If she can survive recruitment year—something no woman has ever done before.

New York Times–bestselling author Rae Carson returns to the world of The Girl of Fire and Thorns in this action-packed fantasy-adventure starring an iconic heroine who fights for her family and her friends, and for a place where she will belong.

“So....I'm a little torn about this one. A lot of things I liked but I was also disappointed with a lot of it. The Fire and Thorns trilogy is one of my favorite and this one fell a little short. The Good Things: -Love all the characters. The old and the new ones. -Like all the talk about PTSD and how it was put in this fantasy world -All the parts about Red when she was young was amazing and the best part of the book. I would have given it a 5 stars if it was just this part. -The writing is as always fun and flow like butter. I've always like Rae Carson writing and after reading pretty much everything she put out, I still love it. -Rae Carson made me tear up again with her cute endings. The bad and the meh: -The storyline felt kind of off. I feel like staying in the training ward was a waste of the plot considering how it start and all the interesting path it could have taken. -I feel like we were at the sideline and everything cool was happening elsewhere. Elisa getting her baby with Hector, most of the cool guards, Storm and Alodia. -Sending Elisa and Hector away was a big no no for me. I understand not wanting to make it about them (even if somehow it kind of happen story wise) but why send them away. I want to see them. I want to see how they interact with Red and their relationship. -It kind of felt like Elisa and Red were somehow not has close as I would have like and that make me sad. Like she has apparently never open up about her backstory to Elisa but she does it with Ivan after knowing him for a little time. The audacity of it makes me mad. -YOU TELLING ME THAT YOU GIVE A CUTE BABY TO ONE OF MY FAV COUPLE AND I BARELY GET TO SEE THEM ALL TOGETHER. -Can I please see how Storm is doing? How is his marriage? How did he change? Is he still the piece of shit that I love. I'm not mad...I just want to know. It wasn't a bad book BUT I feel like a collection of short stories where we see how everyone is doing and good stories about the characters would have been better.”
