College dropout Hai doesn’t know how to face the future until a chance meeting with elderly widow Grazina changes his life.

One summer evening in the town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on a bridge, ready to jump, when he hears someone shout across the river. The voice belongs to Grazina, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia. Over the course of the year, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond.

When Hai takes a job at a diner to support himself and Grazina, his fellow workers become the family he didn’t expect to find. United by desperation and circumstance, and existing on the fringes of society, together they bear witness to each other’s survival.

This is an unforgettable story of unexpected friendship and how far people go to find a second chance.

The Emperor of Gladness Reviews

4.0
“Just…wow. I knew after reading On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, that Ocean Vuong is an incredible writer. Emperor of Gladness was like watching a car crash. You see the collision coming, but you’re still hoping that everyone makes it out. And this is the most beautiful collision you’ll ever read. Life is hard, y’all. And as a 20-something, I related more to Hai than I would have wanted to, but that’s just how well Vuong writes and creates an immersive world for the reader. My only complaint is that this book is too thick to introduce characters that feel meaningless and two minor stories (the pizza place and the man with one ear) I felt didn’t push the story along and would not have changed the plot if they were forgotten. However, if as much care and development was given to them as was given to the HomeMarket family, they could have really elevated the story. Whatever’s next, I will be reading.”
“i read a review earlier that said this book is the answer to the question: "what does life look like when you step back into it?" and that feels pretty spot on. i will never stop adoring ocean and everything he writes. the way he plays with language is insane, his stories are so heartbreaking, and his characters are always beautiful. may we all find the kind of love and companionship that ocean writes of here.”
