The Elephant of Surprise
ByPublisher Description
The latest roaring, rollicking adventure from Edgar Award-winner Joe R. Lansdale, featuring odd-couple P.I.s Hap and Leonard.
Hap and Leonard are an unlikely pair--Hap, a self-proclaimed white trash rebel, and Leonard--a tough-as-nails Black, gay, Vietnam vet and Republican--but they're the closest friend either of them has in the world.
Hap and Leonard are an unlikely pair--Hap, a self-proclaimed white trash rebel, and Leonard--a tough-as-nails Black, gay, Vietnam vet and Republican--but they're the closest friend either of them has in the world.
After years of crime-solving companionship, something's changed: Hap, recently married to their P.I. boss, Brett, is now a family man. Amidst the worst flood East Texas has seen in years, the two run across a woman who's had her tongue nearly cut out, pursued by a heavily armed pair of goons. Turns out the girl survived a mob hit, and the boss has come to clean up the mess.
On a chase that blows even the East Texas swampgrass back, Hap and Leonard must save the girl, and vanquish her foes, before the foes get them first. With a new case to solve, and a brand-new challenge to their relationship, will Hap and Leonard's friendship survive? Will Hap and Leonard survive?
The Elephant of Surprise is rich with Lansdale's trademark humor, whip-smart dialogue, and plenty of ass-kicking adventures.

“This read started out fast and kept rolling. I thought the apocalyptic setting of monsoons, tornados and flooding made me feel all sorts of worry as the adventure continued. It felt never ending for Hap & Leonard as they try and save some helpless Albino girl from demise, while putting themselves in endless peril! I would have loved to have more Hap & Leonard back and forth, as that's what I've really enjoyed in the series- but the storyline stayed to the task at hand and with the elephant of surprise, Joe Lansdale delivered again.”

“To say I never get tired of these books would be an absolute truth. I was led to these books from the short lived TV series, and even now, I picture the actor's faces as I read these books. I do know that series of this type can get stagnant, but that has not happened for me so far. This book does, however, feel like a farewell from the author. I don't if that is the case, and I'm saddened by the thought, but it feel like we were saying goodbye to Hap and Leonard by the end of the book. I know there are novellas, and I will eventually check those out. But I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting this story years later to see how things are for these beloved characters. I wish them the best, but most of all, I hope we do get to visit with them again. Long live Hap and Leonard!!!”
