Expressionless Face“Boy, where do I start? First off, Todd Clark is a bad editor, to put it nicely. An example of his skill: “Michael asked, addressing Michael. Micheal nodded.” Excuse me? Unfortunately, I did not note other examples and I should have. There are plenty of misspellings and errors like this one that shouldn’t go unnoticed when editing. This just shows how little care went into editing. Second, the writing is… all right. It’s not great, a bit juvenile, the author is not a seasoned author, let’s put it like that. His voice isn’t remarkable, but it’s OKAY. In the last story, though, the narrator said “I mean”, when they should’ve been “absent”. Idk the word, but that’s when the narrator is not a character from the story, neither a person known to the characters. And therefore possessive pronouns should be avoided at all costs. Another thing, I liked how he TRIED to be inclusive, but fell into the stereotype traps all the same. A child sexually abused by a man turns out gay and gets off on hunting gay men, r*ping them before killing them. Seriouslyyyy 😬 From what I’ve seen from White’s actual person, that wasn’t the intention at all, but yes, sadly, it is a raging stereotype that gay people are “made” through childhood abuse. Third, poetry is definitely not his forte. I’m all for the artistic liberty of poetry, but at the VERY least it should be feelings-inducing. These felt spat onto the pages with no rereading nor editing (repeating words doesn’t make it more effective, just mildly annoying), and just ideas thrown at your face. Now, about the stories. I liked “99 cents” a lot, I thought it was a pretty cool idea and concept, I wanted to see more of that. Some others like “Beast mode”, “Horse” and “Blue & Red” were not bad, but not great either. The rest were just not for me. When I read extreme horror, I don’t mean to read extreme sexual content, or basically bloody porn. That is NOT my type of read. I’m here for the body horror, the pure dread and fear. But, sadly, White’s writing isn’t about emotions at all, he needs to work a lot on that (or that’s just not what he’s into and that’s cool, but I need them emotions to feel for the characters!). If you’re into sexual splatterpunk, I guess you’ll love this. But you should know what you’re getting into first: no emotions at all (when there are, they’re told with the actual word and not described. Ahem, SHOW, DON’T TELL), mostly predictable endings, very little structure and bad editing. I’ll give White another chance with another book because some of his ideas were very interesting, it’s just overall waaaayyyyy too sexual for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️”
“3.5 - some of the stories and poems were excellent, gory but also inviting reflections. Others were just ok, and there were a couple that I didn’t like. Overall a really good collection!”
