For countless millennia, the dwarves of the have defended the stone gateway into Girdlegard. Many and varied foes have hurled themselves against the portal and died attempting to breach it. No man or beast has ever succeeded. Until now. . .
Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith labors contentedly in the land of Ionandar, the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. Although he does not want for friends, Tungdil is very much aware that he is alone -- indeed, he has not so much as set eyes on another dwarf. But all that is about to change.
Sent out into the world to deliver a message and reacquaint himself with his people, the young foundling finds himself thrust into a battle for which he has not been trained. Not only his own safety, but the life of every man, woman and child in Girdlegard depends upon his ability to embrace his heritage. Although he has many unanswered questions, Tungdil is certain of one thing: no matter where he was raised, he is a true dwarf.
And no one has ever questioned the courage of the Dwarves.

“This has the feel of a Drizzt novel and I really liked that . The journey that Glandallin takes through goblin, dark elf’s, other dangers meanders through the countryside to find more of his people. The war is an added trial and creates a in-depth story. This was a great book and I will at some point pick up more books by this author”
“When I first started this book, I thought I was going to be disappointed and I'm glad to share, I was so wrong 🙌🏾. This book starts out veryyyyy slow for me and there's a lot of things left unexplained, which kinda made it feel like there were plot holes. The further I got into the book, I realized that Heitz was purposely leaving things out to reveal later. That said, I found that even though I wasn't 100% sold in the beginning, I still wanted to know what happened and where the story went, so my interest was clearly peaked more than I initially thought.
There were~ a few things (no spoilers) that were loosely implied through context, but it didn't mess the plot up. It was more just me wanting the 1000% confirmation. Though, part of me wonders if that was on purpose too lol! There were some fun twists in this and unexpectedly a little romance but it's only lightly referenced here and there. My favorite characters were the twins Boïndil and Boëndal, they were SO funny. I loved seeing how Tungdil grew along the journey and really blossomed into the leader they needed. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the next book and can't help but wonder what's going to happen next. If you're looking for a fun epic fantasy, I'd definitely recommend this 🙌🏾!”
