“*Sigh* I love reading historical fiction with BIPOC characters, ESPECIALLY characters of African descent. This was a lovely trip into the era of Marie Antoinette rich with decadent detail and a little mystery!
The only thing I that made me dock a star was the lack of conflict in Bastien and Lilas’ relationship. Their reasons for not being together and admitting their love for each other was very flimsy and that made the book kinda drag.
The book picked up substantially at the end! Even though I knew who the culprit of the mystery was, I was eager to discover the reasons why.
I love Lilas and Bastien’s personalities and their chemistry. I found Bastien humorous! I also love that he calls her “ma arc en ciel”.
I cannot wait to read more of Harlequin’s historical romances.”
“A thoroughly enjoyable book. I loved the unusual setting of pre-revolutionary France and the gorgeous descriptions of dresses, makeup, hairstyles, gardens and palaces. The characters are intriguing and their internal struggles well developed. I felt for Bastien who was afraid to fall in love and suffer like his father suffered for his wife’s death, even if I hated him at times for the way he treated Lilas. I loved the way the question of the characters’ heritage was dealt with in the book, with tact and also realism. I definitely hope to read more of this author!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
“I'm a junkie for historical romance, and from what I have read, "The Duke's Defiant Cinderella" is one of the best. Lilas and Bastien are wonderful characters who took this reader on a beautiful adventure. Grab your coffee or tea and get in a quiet place so you will have no distraction as you read.”
