“This was my first time reading an Abraham novel, and just as I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’m not sure if I would classify this as “epic fantasy”, but whatever category you want to put it in, it was a breath of fresh air for me in the fantasy genre. The pacing was excellent and well-delivered. While the world building wasn’t vast, it was intricately woven and built into each setting or bit of lore. There was enough information to get a general grasp of the history and world, and plenty of mystery to keep me intrigued.
What I loved most was Abraham’s ability to write his characters. They were all so well realized. Each had their own distinctive voice, with motives unique to their role in the story. Some of the best character work I’ve ever read, and it’s only book one in the series. Abraham also has such a talent for describing setting and scenes, using very lyric-like descriptors and imagery. This was an absolute delight to read. Not necessarily action-packed, with much more of an economic and political flavor, but the dialogue, prose, lore, and characterization was wonderful. Great expectations for reading his work in the future!”
