The Doors of Eden

By Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Adrian Tchaikovsky, The Doors of Eden is an extraordinary feat of the imagination and a page-turning adventure about parallel universes and the monsters that they hide.

They thought we were safe. They were wrong.

Four years ago, two girls went looking for monsters on Bodmin Moor. Only one came back.

Lee thought she'd lost Mal, but now she's miraculously returned. But what happened that day on the moors? And where has she been all this time? Mal's reappearance hasn't gone unnoticed by MI5 officers either, and Lee isn't the only one with questions.

Julian Sabreur is investigating an attack on top physicist Kay Amal Khan. This leads Julian to clash with agents of an unknown power - and they may or may not be human. His only clue is grainy footage, showing a woman who supposedly died on Bodmin Moor.

Dr Khan's research was theoretical; then she found cracks between our world and parallel Earths. Now these cracks are widening, revealing extraordinary creatures. And as the doors crash open, anything could come through.

"Tchaikovsky weaves a masterful tale... a suspenseful joyride through the multiverse." (Booklist)

“The Doors of Eden is filled with amazing ideas and beautiful world building. It’s a shame that all of it is so minimally explored in favor of poorly written characters in bland settings. The alternative earths are so carefully written and well thought out. I love every single alternative timeline (although the trilobites lost me once we learned more about them). Every journey into these earths is very well written, especially the time in the rodent earth. The central tension is also really well built up, and the central conflict is resolved well. Unfortunately, I found myself wishing to explore the alternate earths in far more detail than was presented. The author tells us so much about the earths, but we rarely get to see them. I would have loved to have more detail about the dinosauroid hunts or the lemur wars. The majority of the book is instead spent on human Earth which is obviously not as engaging. The characters also have to be some of the most poorly written I have encountered in all of fiction. The two main characters are fine at best, but I can’t really say anything about them other than Lee being timid and Mal being strong willed. A pretty central initial conflict is their strained relationship, and it just seems to resolve itself without much dialogue between the characters. Julian and Alice are absolutely horrendous. They spend the entire book in an emotional affair that Julian pretends he feels guilty about, and we’re reminded endlessly that he’s a horrible father. They also are infuriatingly skeptical of all other characters even when it would make zero sense. There was rarely a chapter that I wasn’t annoyed by them. Dr. Kahn and Dr. Rat are the only well-written characters in the novel, though Kahn unfortunately has some horrible dialogue. Despite all of my criticism, there are some really well written scenes that just convinced me to keep reading. I might recommend skipping the entire plot and just reading the interludes about alternative earths though. The other chapters simply aren’t worth it.”
“4.5 stars rounded up. There were some minor pacing issues that keep this from a full 5 stars but DAMN. That was awesome!! It's been so long since I've read a hefty book like this, and while it took a while to get there, it all came together in a mind-bending and satisfying way. The way Tchaikovsky combines technology, biology, and physics is incredible. I think my favorite parts were the "Interludes." I could have read a book of just those thought experiments. I also want to say, it is so refreshing to read something that feels so classic but includes such a wide array of characters. Unlike so many other books, I feel like I didn't have to compromise on my values to enjoy this book. And for that, I am so, so grateful for this author. This was my first Tchaikovsky book and will certainly not be my last.”
Expressionless Face“Some swelling concepts though was left feeling they'd been covered thinly rather than in any depth. Enjoyed the first half of the book when it was a bit of a mystery crime caper. Lost interest in the second half when we began getting a bit existential. Read to the end to see if there were any surprises, there weren't.”
