The Diary of a Young Girl

The Diary of a Young Girl by B.M. Mooyaart - Doubleday digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Anne Frank's extraordinary diary, written in the Amsterdam attic where she and her family hid from the Nazis for two years, has become a world classic and a timeless testament to the human spirit. Now, in a new edition enriched by many passages originally withheld by her father, we meet an Anne more real, more human, and more vital than ever. Here she is first and foremost a teenage girl—stubbornly honest, touchingly vulnerable, in love with life. She imparts her deeply secret world of soul-searching and hungering for affection, rebellious clashes with her mother, romance and newly discovered sexuality, and wry, candid observations of her companions. Facing hunger, fear of discovery and death, and the petty frustrations of such confined quarters, Anne writes with adult wisdom and views beyond her years. Her story is that of every teenager, lived out in conditions few teenagers have ever known.

The Diary of a Young Girl Reviews

4.5
Loudly Crying Face“I just finished listening to The Diary of Anne Frank. It's such a good book! Despite how sad and scary the circumstances were, she was so funny in her diary. She spoke just like a regular teenager today would! She spoke about puberty, her crushes (a girl and a boy), her interests, the current events, and how annoying the adults around her were. She said things like, "if only I had a girlfriend!", "I can't wait until I start my period and finally become a woman," "why are my parents so annoying?!", "the adults are always doing this. What a bunch of idiots!", and other things that I could easily imagine a modern teenager saying. The version that is out now is different from the version you probably read in middle school. It's worth a reread! Her dad censored the original release by withholding entries about her sexuality and mean comments about her mom. However, now a more complete version has been released. This is such an important book. I am so grateful that she kept such a detailed diary and wanted to share it with everyone. I felt sad as I got toward the end because I knew how things would turn out for her, but she didn't know. She expressed so much emotion in her final entry. I wanted to hug her so hard and protect her!”
Loudly Crying Face“This book was much different than from how I remembered it when I read it in middle school. I can see why people typically enjoyed it. Her writing style was good and she had a lot of really eloquent and thoughtful comments to be made. I honestly think if she lived, she could’ve been a prolific writer. I can also see how this could be relatable to teenagers and others and also I can see how this has made an impact on the world. However, this book was just not my favorite. I was dragging myself through it. I do read historical fiction and have read biographies in the past. This was definitely more interesting than most auto-biographies. I can see why people loved it, but it just wasn’t for me.”
